Petrom City – Coanda 2 Room

Dear SPE Romanian Section Members,

Please be invited to the event “Evaluation, Remediation and Assurance of Well Integrity for Repurposed Wells in Carbon Capture and Storage” by James Yard – CCUS Development Manager. Link below.

Abstract:

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) will play a critical role in decarbonised energy systems of the future. Analysis from leading scientific bodies such as the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) indicate that Net Zero is not possible without a significant amount of CCS.

There are two options for reservoirs when it comes to storing carbon dioxide (CO2):

1) Reusing depleted oil and gas fields

2) Developing new saline aquifers

Depleted fields are advantageous as the geology is well known through decades of hydrocarbon production and there is exiting infrastructure in place that could potentially be repurposed. However, all the legacy infrastructure was designed for oil and gas use and is often unsuitable for CO2 injection, and the wells within the field act as potential leak paths if they penetrate the primary seal.

When redeveloping depleted fields for carbon storage, well integrity is the highest project risk and significant work must be conducted to ensure that any CO2 injected is safely and securely contained with the storage complex on a geological timescale.

This presentation introduces the challenges with repurposing depleted fields and explores well intervention solutions to evaluate, remediate and manage existing well stock.
